Workshop
Tuesday, November 22, 2016, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

The Digital Humanities Initiative (DHI) is beginning a new public event series entitled Conversations in the Digital Humanities on October 4. The DHI is an 18-month preparatory project seeking to bring together people, projects, and new technologies in the Digital Humanities (DH) at CEU. Conversations in the Digital Humanities features a series of invited DH experts in dialogue with representatives from CEU and other local institutions. The 2016 Fall semester’s conversation series will take place in the Monument Building’s (Nador u. 9) room 201 and consist of four sessions, each of which will be followed by a reception.

Starting at 4:00 pm on October 4, Corina Moldovan, the director of Babeş-Bolyai University’s Transylvania Digital Humanities Centre or DigiHUBB (Cluj-Napoca) will start our series by presenting the challenges of establishing the first DH center in Romania. Dr. Moldovan will also engage in a discussion with Marcell Sebők (Medieval Studies Department), Jessie Labov (Center for Media, Data and Society) and the audience about the local specifics of practicing the DH in Eastern European academia.

At 5:00 pm on November 3, Maciej Eder (University of Krakow) will introduce his project on Stylometry, a text analysis method recently revived by the use of computer technology. Jessie Labov (CMDS) and Levente Seláf (Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences) will serve as interlocutors in a more general discussion about the on-going technological revolution in the field of text analysis.

At 4:00 pm on November 22, Susan Schreibman (Maynooth University) will present on Digital Humanities, Social Engagement, and the Archive, focusing on the specifics of her “social engagement approach” to DH in order to find, retain, and enrich audiences of digital scholarship. Diane Geraci (Director, CEU Library) will moderate the discussion between the audience and Dr. Schreibman about the possibilities of reforming traditional archival techniques and methodologies with the help of the DH.

Zsófia Ruttkay (MOME TechLab, Budapest) will discuss The Digital Museum: Challenges and Opportunities of the Application of Digital Technologies for GLAM Institutions starting at 4:00 pm on December 8. Vlad Naumescu (Sociology and Social Anthropology) will engage in a conversation with Dr. Ruttkay and the audience about the future of exhibitions and museums in light of the current developments in the realm of digital applications. This event will be co-hosted by the Visual Studies Platform.
