Insider View on Challenges and Opportunities
Senior Advisor, Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra
Introduction: Dr. Laszlo Pinter, Professor and Acting Head of Department, Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy and Senior Fellow, International Institute for Sustainable Development
Abstract: The lecture gives an overview of the EU's environmental policy from its outset in 1972 to the present and analyses challenges and opportunities for the future. It will put environmental policy into the wider political and sustainable development context, in particular how environmental policy contributes to growth and jobs. The central framework of the EU's present policies is the 7th Environmental Action Programme with priorities until 2020. Particular focus will be on energy and climate and circular economy policies which are the present and future cornerstones for EU environmental policy. The lecture offers an insider view on how policy is being developed and how decisions are formulated. It will also highlight features of the EU which are important to understand when the policies and their results are being analysed. Policies and policy processes will be explained with the help of concrete examples.
