The War, the State and the Society in Current Ukraine: A View from Lithuania

Petras Vaitiekūnas is a Lithuanian politician who was the Foreign Minister of Lithuania from 2006 to 2008. From 1988 to 1990 he was a member of Sąjūdis, the democratic resistance movement of Lithuania. He was a signatory to the Lithuanian declaration of independence in 1990 and a member of the Lithuanian Supreme Council from 1990 to 1992. He served as foreign affairs adviser to the President of Lithuania from 1993 to 1998 and in 2004. Vaitiekūnas was ambassador to Ukraine from 2010 to 2014. He was the only ambassador who stayed in Crimea during the Russia's aggression and was awarded the Community of Democracies' Mark Palmer Prize in 2015 for his contribution to defending freedoms, democracy and principles of international law in the wake of the Russian aggression against Georgia and Ukraine, and for his efforts to create civil society in Belarus.
