Opening Remarks about the Right to Education for Girls in Pakistan by

Nehl Hirani, Human Rights MA, Department of Legal Studies

HE NAMED ME MALALA is an intimate portrait of Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot in the head when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education in her region. The attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world.

The then 15-year-old miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund. In December 2014, she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, for her “struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education”.

All members of the CEU community are welcome!
