A distinguished teacher and scholar, Jim Murdoch will discuss issues of particular importance to doctoral students as they pursue academic careers, with particular attention to the question:

What are the implications for teaching in a democracy under threat?

Murdoch recently was honored by the Council of Europe for his development of the European Human Rights Project, recognized as the best exemplar of legal education in European human rights.

Murdoch read law as an undergraduate at Glasgow and earned his LLM from the University of California at Berkeley. He served as Head of the School of Law, University of Glasgow from 1996-2000, and has taught at the Universities of Minz, Freiburg, Hamburg and Paris Ouest. He also was a professeur stagiaire with the Directorate of Human Rights of the Council of Europe in France. An elected member of the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg and a regular participant in Council of Europe seminar programme visits to Central and East European states, Murdoch has developed a particular interest in non-judicial human rights enforcement mechanisms.
