Collectivity & In(ter)dependence: Symposium on Performative Arts

Academic & Research
Thursday, September 21, 2017, 12:00 pm – Saturday, September 23, 2017, 8:00 pm

This is a continuation of COLLECTIVITY/RESPONSIBILITY/PERFORMATIVITY – Symposium on Performative Arts held at Central European University in September 2016. It is a hybrid, cultural-academic event bringing together academics, performing artists and cultural activists at CEU to engender dialogues between representatives of thought and creativity committed to and facilitated by the principles of democratic freedom. These dialogues may be focused on ways in which these inhabitants of different areas of reflection can defend their autonomy but the resulting insights will have bearing on a more general thought of how to ensure the freedom of creativity in the current political climate of neoliberal and illiberal austerities. What makes us independent, interdependent, and dependent? CEU’s commitment to a renewed inquiry into what open society can mean has a very close connection to what makes independent arts production a political question: performance art always demands collectivity, and mobilization as it requires the capacity to induce a resonance with an audience. It is in this resonance, always embodied and affective, that the collective is maintained for the duration of and arguably beyond the performance. Performative arts are an intrinsic democratic value of exceptional worth as its work especially illuminates the links between affect, politics, publics, and collectivity in general.

The symposium is free of charge and is led in English. Pre-registration is needed. Online registration form at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdccgdWMc8UGaLHR-QNeYdrPJBgqlXs...
