How to think about and measure innovation at firms and how is it related to other activities? The presentation will discuss evidence from survey of 15 thousand manufacturing firms across seven European countries. After discussing measurement issues I will talk about how innovation is intertwined with internationalization activities such as exporting or foreign direct investment (paper, VOXEU post). Then I focus on how productivity and innovation can be linked to firms climbing a ladder of internationalization from intermediated sales to FDI (paper, VOXEU post).
