Art and Education for Human Rights: The forgotten conflict of the Western Sahara

This presentation will shed light on the forgotten conflict of the Western Sahara, the present situation at the Sahrawi Refugee Camps and in the Occupied Territories. It will focus on how artistic practices have been actively used since 2007 to break the wall of silence that hovers over this forgotten conflict. Looking at the International Art and Human Rights Meeting in Western Sahara (better known as ARTifariti) we will see how, through peaceful means of collaborative artistic projects, foreign artists and refugees are raising awareness in order to help bring this long lasting conflict to an end.
Fernando Perez-Martin is a lecturer in Art Education at the University of Granada in Spain. With his team Grupo Metasíntesis he has worked on several projects in the Sahrawi Refugee Camps in Algeria and in the Liberated Territories of Western Sahara using art as a tool for social transformation. Since 2007 he has been involved in the International Art and Human Rights Meeting in Western Sahara (ARTifariti) with artists, educators and activists from many nationalities and backgrounds. Perez-Martin holds a PhD in Fine Arts and has given lectures and seminars in a dozen countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and America.
