The current political trend vilifying migrants has had deep implication in the EU ranging from Brexit to right-wing governments gaining power. Only a few months ago Austria, alongside Hungary, refused to sign the UN Global Compact on Migration for fear of accepting the right to migration. The question arises who is granted this right and to what extent is it regulated (towards its own citizens and those which defines as aliens). Asylum seekers are also suffering from the negative publicity and fear of the ‘other.’ Multiple EU member states deny access to third country nationals appealing to the Dublin regulation. Thus have international standards of human rights become outdated?Costanza Pusateri is working in the NGO sector in Vienna. She is familiar with the experience of migrant women crossing EU borders in search for a better life and the ability to support their families. Her background in human rights and international studies is ever-present given the political backlash against migrants. She has been a migrant most of her life and has experienced first hand the gendered aspect of migration.
