Abstract:

Demonstrations and other disruptions have continued in Hong Kong for weeks and there is no clear end in sight. There are many reasons cited for the current unrest, but some of the root causes can be traced back to the negotiations in the 1980s that led to the 1997 transfer from the British to the Chinese. Professor Hunter had a small role in the negotiations as a legal consultant and will discuss some of the connections between the 1980s and 2019.
