ABSTRACT Social bots are engagingly and structurally omnipresent in online networking sites. They perform essential roles in diverse aspects of communications throughout the internet, ranging from computational propaganda campaigns to marketing and task automation.

Currently, Twitter and Reddit are the central hub and habitat of social bots. Although these sites differ in operation, their functionalities are emblematic for bots’ applications.

Social bots are chiefly classified into two main categories, malignant or benign, based on their goals and dynamics. Analyzing and understanding the behavior of social bots is challenging and undetermined due to their lack of data, variety of types, and missions.

The difficulty in tackling the problem of social bots is lacking the system to ascertain their foundational concepts and practical patterns. One way of moving toward building the theory of social bots is to understand their design patterns and strategies, which is what this talk will attempt to undertake.

BIO / Abdullah is a PhD candidate in network science at the Central European University and holds a master’s degree in engineering. He is primarily interested in the real-world use of Data Analytics, including quantification, text mining, and natural language processing. Currently, he is researching and testing social and political bots and how they interact with humans as part of an ecosystem. He is also exploring computational propaganda, the impact of language models, and digital extremism networks.
