Nadia Jones-Gailani will discuss here the entanglements of nation, race, religion, and gender that inform the memory making process of refugee women. Drawing upon the oral history interviews collected for the book, Jones-Gailani will reflect upon the intersections of food, religion and memory. The talk will illustrate the meaning of ethno-religious identity in shaping the everyday lives and experiences of Iraqi migrant women with selections from oral histories recorded between 2008 and 2012 in Amman, Toronto and Detroit.
About the Author: Nadia Jones-Gailani is Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University. Before joining CEU, she held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of South Florida (USA) and Ryerson University (Canada) from 2013-2016. Her research interests include migrants and migration networks, diaspora and transnationalism, feminist ethnography, Islamic and postcolonial feminist critique, memory and trauma, and food history.
