Student Debate: Should philanthropy fill in the gap left by government?

CEU Philanthropy Week / 2021
Thursday, May 20, 2021, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Philanthropy has long supported development, innovation, social change, and crisis response in communities across the world. Governments and international organizations work closely with the philanthropic sector around national and international priorities. At a time of global pandemic, how can philanthropy support government in delivering core public services?

To find out, you're invited to join the Student Philanthropy Council, CEU Debate Society and the Debating Society University of Vienna unpack the relationship between philanthropy and government in the face of multiple global challenges.

Student Speakers

The speakers will debate other key questions on the issue, including:

  • What are the key considerations when assessing the relationship between philanthropy and government?

  • What are some of philanthropy’s great achievements, and is it reasonable to expect the same outcomes from governments?

  • Are philanthropic organizations able to tackle issues that partisan governments are not?
