ABSTRACTS

Dorottya Szikra: Our research project deals with the quantitative and qualitative analysis of welfare state trajectories during the process of democratic backsliding and rising (right-wing) populist rule. Countries under focus include HungaryPoland, the Russian Federation and Turkey. At the DI seminar we will present the first results, the comparative analysis of welfare state reforms in Turkey and Hungary under democratic backsliding.

Eva Fodor: My new book with Palgrave Macmillan analyzes the gender regime of anti-liberal Hungary. I argue that the Orban government is in the process of creating what I call a "carefare regime" via its political discourse and a set of recently introduced regulations targeting "families" and women. I will describe the character and consequences of the carefare regime and argue that beyond reshaping gender relations, it serves the goals and supports the logic of Fidesz' political rule.
