HRSI Workshop | Exploring Artivism (Art + Activism)

Poster of the event in a zine format
Wednesday, June 23, 2021, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

As the semester comes to close, join HRSI’s interactive digital workshop in collaboration with ARTE, to learn about the intersection of art and activism (artivism). With increased media censorship, the world is seeing a resurgence of Zines as an exercise to freedom of speech of marginalized voices. For examples, zines have been used in the Hong Kong protests to put the message out, to LGBTQIA+ zines in regions where it is condemned.  During this workshop, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the self-publishing tool of zines by creating their own version of the artform. We will also be exploring how zines are used as a tool to help bring awareness and advocacy to pressing human rights issues.

For this online workshop no previous artistic knowledge is necessary and very minimal art supplies are needed; all we ask is that participants bring their passion for creativity, their interest in human rights, and their willingness to share and learn from others in the CEU community. The first half of the workshop will be devoted to discussion and providing background information on the subject matter, the second half will be devoted to individual creation (offline, if so desired), participants will be encouraged to return and share their artwork with others.
