This talk explores questions of feminist knowledge production through Edward Said’s writing on travelling theory and critical feminist work on power/knowledge. Focusing explicitly on intersectionality, the talk thinks through its history, how and where it has travelled, and the forms of debate it has made (im)possible in different parts of the world. Thinking with the context of the Middle East and North Africa in particular, I ask how we might spend time with the responses to intersectionality that have emerged, and what it might mean to centre forms of theorising that speak to the global division of labour.

Sara Salem is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at the London School of Economics. Her research interests include postcolonial studies, feminist theory, Marxist theory, and global histories of anticolonialism. Her recently published book with Cambridge University Press is entitled Anticolonial Afterlives in Egypt: The Politics of Hegemony (2020). She is currently thinking and writing about ghosts and anticolonial archives.
