Online Undergraduate Conference: Nationalism and Identity Politics in the 21st Century

Conference
Undergraduate Conference
Tuesday, January 18, 2022, 10:00 am – Wednesday, January 19, 2022, 6:00 pm

Nationalism has proved to be a driving force of international politics for centuries now. However, the break-down of the empires and waves of post-colonial movements have demonstrated the enduring relevance of nationalism for contemporary times. The re-emergence of (populist) right-wing parties and movements in the last decades only underscores nationalism’s place as a key area of research. This conference invites submissions from undergraduate students from around the world on topics related to nationalism and identity politics in the modern world. The conference offers undergraduates an opportunity to discuss their ideas in a broader setting with some of the most prominent scholars in nationalism studies. It covers a wide range of topics, from theories of nationalism, populism, ethnic and right-wing mobilisation to case studies of banal nationalism and everyday experiences of nationhood. Nationalism studies is inherently interdisciplinary, and we aim to bring together different perspectives and engage in a fruitful discussion on new development and innovative approaches in the field.

Participants will get a chance to discuss their projects with graduate and postgraduate students as well as the faculty of the CEU Nationalism Studies Program, fostering academic exchange amongst BA, MA, PhD students and faculty members.

During the conference, each participant will have 15 minutes to present their research projects, followed by a Q&A session and feedback from a discussant. We will also host an online social event, offering students an opportunity to have an informal conversation with the faculty members and some of the postgraduate students.

Please submit a short description of your talk (max. 350 words) by December 25, 2021. (Conference papers should be no longer than 1500 words). Click here for the submission form. Deadline for Submissions: December 25, 2021
