Compatibilist libertarianism

Colloquium

Tuesday, February 15, 2022, 3:40 pm – 5:20 pm

In this talk, I will give an overview of what I take to be the compatibilist libertarian view on free will. I will begin by summarizing some of the main scientifically motivated challenges for free will and will respond to them by presenting a naturalistic indispensability argument for free will. The argument supports the reality of free will as an emergent higher-level phenomenon. I will explain why the resulting picture of free will does not conflict with the possibility that the fundamental laws of nature are deterministic and why it is nonetheless libertarian in an important respect.
