ANIMADOCS’ projects
Tuesday, March 1, 2022, 5:40 pm – 7:20 pm

Maria Stanisheva will present a case-study of her experience working in various formats to create "art for social change" on topics such as Women's rights; Inclusion of people with disabilities; Racial inequality; Sexual discrimination; Refugee rights; Climate Change and more. She will showcase ways of combining animation and documentary content in short and feature-length formats, human rights campaigns, explainer videos, political satire, online series and research outreach. The workshop will open up a debate about the practicalities behind animated film production and ways in which students can summarize and present their projects for an audience beyond the academic world.

Maria Stanisheva is a film director/producer and founder of ANIMADOCS, an independent film production house based between NYC and Sofia. She is a graduate of Sofia University, Central European University and New York Film Academy’s Documentary filmmaking program and has over 15 years of experience working on feature films, shorts, TV and online series. Maria specializes in social issue documentaries, animation and experimenting with mixed genres. Her 2016 animated campaign “Together to End Male Guardianship” commissioned by Human Rights Watch Saudi Arabia, was seen by over 10 million people and featured in the New York Times and Euronews. The animated-documentary FATHER which she produced was awarded 28 times, including the Golden Dove for Animated Film at DOK Leipzig Festival. She is currently working on FINDING HOME - an animated-documentary series and installation project that reveals climate-related refugee stories from around the world. Maria is a faculty member of the New York Film Academy’s Documentary Department and teaches classes in "Animation for Documentary Film“ in Europe and the USA.

This presentation is open to public and it is organized as part of the DPP course Documentary for Social Change. The discussion will be moderated by the course’s instructors: Jeremy Braverman, Head of the Library’s Media Hub; and Kate Coyer, Research Affiliate, Center for Media, Data and Society.
