(Re)Distribution and Copyright Law

Seminar
Giulia Priora
Friday, March 4, 2022, 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

The IPeers Research Group at the Legal Studies Department invites you to its first event of its Spring 2022 "Critical IP Constellations" Seminar Series.

Giulia Priora, assistant professor at NOVA School of Law, Lisbon and affiliated researcher at the CEU Center for Media Data and Society will shed light on the modernization of EU copyright law and its (re)distributive implications.

Abstract:

Copyright law is divisive. In the scholarly and public debate, the centrality of copyright rules in our everyday life – from press information to education to the entertainment industry – leads to a narrative of polarization between “winners” and “losers”. Recent and on-going attempts in the EU to modernize copyright for the digital era display the presence of consolidated factions in such debates.

An often-neglected side of the story is the potential carried by copyright legislation to effectively allocate critical resources in society. In light of proactive steps undertaken by the EU legislator to secure a fair distribution of revenues between authors and producers, as well as between producers and platforms, the Talk will inspire discussions around the question: is modern copyright law more about distribution than reward?
