About the book
The Gender-regime of Anti-Liberal Hungary is the first attempt at describing key elements of the gender regime of illiberal rule, a form of authoritarian capitalism with an anti-liberal political and social agenda.
An important part of this agenda that directly targets gender relations through a set of policies, political practice and discourse is “carefare.” State carefare includes selective pronatalist measures along with the familialization and sentimentalization of care, with the purpose of disciplining women into doing an increasing amount paid and unpaid work without fair remuneration. The book analyzes the carefare regime in depth, contrasts it to other social policy ideal-types, and demonstratis how carefare is not only a set of policies targeting women, but an integral element of anti-liberal rule that can be seen emerging globally.
About the speaker
Eva Fodor is Professor of Gender Studies and is currently a member of CEU's Senior Leadership Team as Pro-Rector for Foresight and Analysis. She has a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California in Los Angeles and works in the field of comparative social inequalities. Specifically, she is interested in how and why gender differences in the labor market and elsewhere are shaped, reshaped, renegotiated and reproduced in different types of societies and in different social contexts. Her ongoing research projects address the impact of the Covid - 19 pandemic on the division of care work, and the transformation of the labor market during and following the pandemic.
