Managing Young Adulthood Under State Socialism

by Orel Beilinson, Ph.D. Candidate, Yale University

Around 1900, industrializing Europe began to experience a crisis in its youths' transition to adulthood. Previous class barriers began to crumble; new labor markets emerged: the life course of the parents was no longer necessarily available for young people. This research explores, in macro and comparative terms, the trajectory of European societies reacting to this crisis throughout the twentieth century. The presentation will be a first attempt to characterize the state-socialist regimentation of the life course in Eastern Europe, excluding the Soviet Union. This attempt reveals the tension between the category of "youth" as conceptualized, imagined, and organized under state socialism and the life of young adults, who were increasingly less of "youth" than they were a century earlier. Some attention is paid to the resonance of this categorization in the eyes of Radio Free Europe. The presentation will also expose how Open Society Archive's unique Central Asian resources, when examined through the lens of transitions to adulthood, can shed new light on the perestroika in the Soviet "margins".
