Future University Lab as a joint initiative of the Jagiellonian University (funded through Polish Excellence Initiative) and Una Europa (one of university alliances established in respace to the EU European Universities Initiative) was launched in February 2020. Eight European universities: Freie Universität Berlin, Alma Mater Studiorum-Università di Bologna, University of Edinburgh, University of Helsinki, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, KU Leuven, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne joint their efforts to re-think or re-imagine European university of the 21st century.
The presentation will examine the advantages and disadvantages of Future UniLab’s method and its practical application. Some of the results presented by Visionaries seem to be interesting and inspiring. They proposed the concept of the Unfinishedness of the university, that represents an important turn in understanding its mission, focusing on the spirit of co-creation and meaningful learning-teaching process when good teaching inspires students (and staff) to embark on their own journeys of knowledge attainment and understanding. Although it was our duty to envision European University, we came to the agreement that a focus on supra-national, federal solutions should not, however, lead to the homogenisation of educational experiences. Equally common was the conviction that the main task of the university is not to educate top-class specialist for knowledge-based economy but to better around, through its daily activity and through the civic engagement of the alumni.
