On Wednesday 25 Jan at 17:40 (CET) the Department of Medieval Studies will hold its first public lecture of the term. This will be given by Christina Antenhofer from the University of Salzburg, entitled Luggage for a life yet to be lived: What objects have to tell us about past lives.
Prof Antenhofer will compare inventories from the bridal trousseaus of Paula Gonzaga (1478) and Bianca Maria Sforza (1493). She argues that inventories can be read as narratives conveying information on the bride's relationship to her family and on expectations attributed to her future life. Even if these expectations were often in stark contrast to the lived reality, bridal trousseaus give insights into women's lives and spheres of action as well as into the networks created through objects.
