The times and timing of community energy. The story of Vienna

Roundtable
The Times and Timing of Community Energy
Monday, October 9, 2023, 5:40 pm – 6:40 pm

EPRG comes back at CEU with an invitation to take another kind of trip through Vienna and to explore the community energy initiatives that take shape as we speak. Our guides are Konstantin Geiger and Mika Hasselbring, energy and urban experts who are part of the Urban Innovation Vienna team, the organization that works with the city of Vienna to support citizen-led energy projects.

Community energy is a growing topic within the field of the energy transition. Researchers from all over the world are following the trend of citizens organizing themselves and trying to take back control of the energy system. The ways in which they are doing this are very different and with different rates of success. Our aim is to explore the social side of the energy transition and uncover some of the stories. We start with Vienna.

About the speakers:

  • Konstantin Geiger is an expert on urban renewable energy with a background in economics. In the field of ecological economics he has been working at federal and state level in Austria on issues like green finance, CO2-tax and community energy.
  • Mika Hasselbring (MSc) has a Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning and Master's degree in Urban Studies (Geography) with a focus on economic and financial geography. At the department of Energy of Urban Innovation Vienna, Mika works on energy communities and the decarbonization of Vienna's housing stock.
