This event is part of CIVICA's Democracy in the 21st Century Seminar Series.

Many countries have undergone constitution-making processes in the past decades. Some of them, however, have not been successful. They have either failed in their attempt to give the country a new constitution or they have produced a short-lived constitution. The reasons for these failures can vary considerably from country to country. This workshop analyses the failure's main possible causes by exploring two case-studies (Chile and Kenya) and situating them in the literature on constitution-making, while contrasting them with other examples such as Iceland and Israel. The panelists will use these examples to theorize on possible lessons that may be useful for future politicians, policymakers or scholars interested in the possibility of enacting or replacing a constitution.
