CIVICA Democracy in the 21st Century Seminar | Democratic Resilience: Some Conceptual Challenges

Seminar
CIVICA
Thursday, November 9, 2023, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

This event is part of CIVICA's Democracy in the 21st Century Seminar Series.

The topic of democratic resilience has become a salient research area in democratic studies in the past couple of years, even though it is still in a relatively early stage of development. The bulk of this literature has focused on providing in-depth case studies and broader empirical analyses, with some prescriptive conclusions usually drawn on their bases. However, extensive conceptual assessments of democratic resilience have been fairly rare, with only a handful of exceptions (e.g. Boese et al.: 2021; Holloway and Manwaring: 2022; Volacu and Aligică: 2023).

The aim of this seminar is to engage with a variety of questions related to the conceptualization of democratic resilience. These will range from the different and sometimes incompatible ways in which it has been defined, to the relation between our understanding of democracy and that of democratic resilience, and to the pitfalls raised by adopting either excessively maximalist or excessively minimalist perspectives when it comes to spelling out the centrally defining elements of democratic resilience.

Speaker: Alexandru Volacu

Associate Professor, University of Bucharest

Director of the Bucharest Center for Political Theory

Member of the Justice Everywhere cooperative of political theorists
