The latest census data in most Central European countries show significant aging and numerical decline of the population. These trends have a multiplier effect on ethnic minorities scattered in the region. The phenomenon has a deep psychological impact on individuals and various groups of the population as well as broad economic, social, and political consequences not just for the countries in question but also for the European Union and the continent as a whole.The Press Freedom Foundation from Vojvodina, Serbia has asked a multinational group of researchers to shed light on these issues with an interdisciplinary approach. A core group of demographers, historians, legal scholars, political scientists,sociologists, and others –from Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia –have agreed to meet in Budapest on November 24, 2023, for a one-day conference.

A legutóbbi népszámlálási adatok szerint a legtöbb közép-európai ország lakossága jelentős mértékben elöregszik és fogy,ami többszörösen kihat a régió nemzeti kisebbségeire. A jelenségnek mély lélektani hatása lehet egyénekre és különböző társadalmi csoportokra, de széleskörű gazdasági, szociális, kulturális és politikai következményeket is von maga után nemcsak az érintett országokra, hanem az Európai Unióra és a kontinens egészére nézve is.A vajdasági Sajtószabadság Alapítvány felkérte a jelenséggel foglalkozó kutatók egy nemzetközi csoportját, hogy multidiszciplináris tanácskozás keretében vitassákmeg a releváns folyamatokat. Kezdeményezésünkre magyarországi, romániai, szerbiai és szlovákiai demográfusok, történészek, jogtudósok, szociológusok és politológusok első köre elhatározta, hogy 2023. november 24-én Budapesten találkoznakaz Alapítvány és partnerei által szervezett egynapos konferencián.
