Open Science - In Theory and in Practice

Lecture
Dr Frances Pinter
Tuesday, December 5, 2023, 5:00 pm

Open Science means many things with different implications for different disciplines. It is an approach to scientific research that forefronts transparent and accessible knowledge developed through collaborative networks and shared openly. Increasingly it is a requirement built into many research grants. But how does one achieve its aims and objectives? What should each individual researcher do to deliver on such goals? This presentation aims to clarify what open science is (and is not). It will contextualize why and how it came about and then provide practical information on its applications, especially for the social sciences and humanities.

Dr Frances Pinter is the Executive Chair of the Central European University Press and formerly CEO of Manchester University Press. She advises several small university presses around the world. She was the founding Publisher of Bloomsbury Academic. She is also the founder of Knowledge Unlatched, taking a particular interest in developing sustainable business models for open access monographs. Previously she was Publishing Director at the Open Society Institute where she established EIFL and the Centre for Publishing Development, providing support and training for publishers in all post-communist countries. She is a visiting senior fellow at the London School of Economics.
