Yugo-Region Research Group at the CEU and European Western Balkans have the pleasure of inviting you to the screening of the documentary “The Time of Stabilitocracy“, which will take place on Tuesday, 5 December at 17:30 CET in A-415.

The documentary “The Time of Stabilitocracy“, produced by European Western Balkans and Panorama Films, analyses the relation between EU integration and democratization in the Western Balkans, as well as the phenomenon of “stabilitocracy”, undemocratic rule with international support thanks to the promise of stability.

The documentary was created by Nikola Burazer, executive editor at European Western Balkans and CEU alumnus (NATI ’14) and Filip Lukić, journalist at Serbian TV N1.

The screening of the documentary will be followed by a discussion with the following panelists:

  • Nikola Burazer, executive editor at EWB and co-author of “The Time of Stabilitocracy”
  • Daniel Bochsler, associate professor at CEU and full professor at the University of Belgrade

More information on “The Time of Stabilitocracy”

The documentary “The Time of Stabilitocracy” focuses on the phenomenon of “stabilitocracy”, with special focus on Montenegro under Milo Đukanović, North Macedonia under Nikola Gruevski and Serbia under Aleksandar Vučić. The documentary aimed to explain how “stabilitocracies” were created, why were they supported or tolerated by the European Union, and how could the enlargement deadlock be broken and democracy supported in the Western Balkans.

The interlocutors in the documentary include a wide range of experts and politicians from Western Balkan countries and the EU: Florian Bieber, Director of the Centre for Southeast European Studies (Graz), Johanna Deimel, Political Analyst, co-author of the term “stabilocracy”, Reinhard Priebe, Chair of the Senior Experts’ group on rule of law in Macedonia and BiH (2015-2019), Daliborka Uljarević, Executive Director of the Centre for Civic Education (Podgorica), Pierre Mirel, Honorary Director General and European Commission Official (1981-2003), Igor Bandović, Director of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (Beograd), Bodo Weber, Senior Associate at the Democratization Policy Council (Berlin), Tena Prelec, Research Associate at the University of Oxford, Radmila Šekerinska Jankovska, Minister of Defence of North Macedonia (2017-2022), Nikola Dimitrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia (2017-2020), and Engjellushe Morina, Senior Research Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (Berlin).

The documentary “The Time of Stabilitocracy” premiered in Belgrade in December 2022, and has been broadcasted on Serbian TV N1 throughout 2023. It will be screened on Universities and public institutions in different EU capitals in December 2023 and January 2024.
