On the 80th anniversary of the Hungarian Shoah, the CEU Nádor Street building houses András Böröcz’s kinetic sculpture, the Noisemaker. Commissioned and supported by the Polgár Foundation, the work—which is reminiscent of wagons, street organs, cymbals, and wooden toys, rolling on wheels—will make several trips from here. The artist and the commissioner envisage that the piece, also known as the Wagon, will “make noise” during various performances to mark the 80th anniversary, actively accompanying theater, dance, music, poetry, and film.

The mission of the Wagon is to keep the memory alive: never forget the horrors of the Holocaust, the Porajmos (Roma Holocaust), and the humiliation of all minorities.

(A regular exhibitor in Budapest, András Böröcz has been living in Brooklyn since 1984.)
