Ontic Oppression: A useful concept for considering the impacts of racism and sexism

Seminar

This talk explores the relation between forms of oppression such as racism and sexism, and the social construction of human kinds such as race kinds and gender kinds. It is common to say that racist and sexist ideologies and practices shape the ways in which people think about certain social groups, such as women and people of colour. I explore and defend the further claim that the very kinds or categories themselves are also shaped by oppressive ideologies and practices. This is an ontological impact or dimension of oppression, which I term ‘ontic oppression’, and which I show to involve a particular kind of moral injury. I argue that recognising ontic oppression is useful for advancing emancipatory projects such as feminist and anti-racist social movements.
