Environmental Defenders: Their Story of Courage and Resilience

Panel Discussion
Environmental Defenders/Quinto Inuma
Tuesday, March 12, 2024, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

On 29 November 2023, Quinto Inuma, a Peruvian indigenous environmental defender, was murdered in reprisal for safeguarding approximately 23 hectares of the Amazon Forest. His sacrifice underscores the ongoing struggles faced by indigenous peoples and women and men across Latin America in protecting their territories and the environment from exploitation and destruction.

In response to this injustice, we propose a presentation and conversation space dedicated to honoring the legacy of environmental defenders in Latin America. We aim to shed light on the stories of these courageous individuals from the region by reclaiming space in an international academic forum. Through this platform for their stories, we wish to amplify their voices in the global conversation on environmental defenders. We aim to pay tribute to these environmental defenders who have dedicated their lives to defending nature and their ancestral lands.

We will have the privilege to have as panelists: Dr. Julia Carolin Sachseder from Gender Studies Department and Ph.D. student Gina D'Alesandro as well as moderator Dr. Anke Schaffartzik from the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy.

Organizers: students of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy

Program: Introduction, Video presentation & Panel discussion

The event will be followed by a small reception.
