POSTPONED: Analyzing Ukrainian Society during the War: Challenges of Data Collection and Conceptual Framing

ABSTRACT | This presentation aims to explore the challenges associated with reliable knowledge production in war-torn societies, with a specific focus on the Russian war against Ukraine since 2014. Various aspects of knowledge production will be examined, encompassing issues such as problems and issues of framing and wording that define the character of the conflict, challenges of data collection, researchers’ positioning dilemmas. The latter part of the discussion will analyze changes in thematic focus and analytical frameworks in the study of Ukrainian society post-February 2022.

BIO | Viktoriya Sereda is a sociologist, who is currently a Head Coordinator of the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Studies at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin; a Senior Advisor of the research group PRISMA UKRAÏNA: War, Migration and Memory at the Forum Transregionale Studien. Her research focuses on sociology of migration, urban sociology, memory studies, nationalism and identity studies. She is also a senior research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 2020 and a professor in the department of Sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University. In the spring semester of 2021, she was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Basel. From 2011 to 2017, she was the head of the sociological team for the project “Region, Nation and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary and Transcultural Reconceptualization of Ukraine”, organised by the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. In 2016–2017 and 2019–2020 she was the MAPA Research Fellow at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, where she developed a digital atlas of social changes in Ukraine after the Euromaidan.
