What's in a Name? Eastern European History and its Audiences

This talk will explore the challenges (and opportunities) inherent in writing histories of Eastern European for different readerships: popular, mass-market, academic, Western and Eastern. It will also reflect on the current publishing climate for history in the English-speaking world, and strategies for adapting work for various audiences. 

Jacob Mikanowski is a historian and journalist based in Portland, Oregon. He completed his doctoral work in Polish history at the University of California, Berkeley, and has since covered Eastern European politics and culture for Harper'sThe Guardian, and The New York Times. His first book, Goodbye, Eastern Europe: An Intimate History of a Divided Land, appeared in 2023.
