You are cordially invited to the Launch Event of the Rule of Law Clinic, a new project established at the CEU Democracy Institute in Budapest. The Clinic aims to give the rule of law a voice in front of the highest courts and support the research on pressing rule of law issues.

The keynote speech at the Launch Event will be delivered by Prof. Adam Bodnar, Minister of Justice and a former Human Rights Commissioner of Poland. Prof. Bodnar, together with the team of the Human Rights Commissioner Office, was awarded the 2019 Rule of Law Award by the World Justice Project. Prof. Bodnar will give a lecture on ‘The Legal and Political Challenges in Rebuilding the Rule of Law in Poland’.

The Rule of Law Clinic was established with a generous EUR 1M grant from Stiftung Mercator. The Clinic offers public support to rule of law professionals and facilitate fellowships to enhance expertise on pressing rule of law issues. The Clinic also implements programs to enhance awareness among the public on the core values of the European Union and helps to further develop the Good Lobby Profs – a pro-bono initiative, which aims to hold power in Europe accountable.

Adam Bodnar (LEGS ’01) – Minister of Justice of Poland since December 2023. He is a law professor at SWPS University, a visiting professor at the University of Cologne and a senior research fellow at the CEU Democracy Institute. From 2004 to 2015, he was an associate of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and between 2015 and 2021 he was the Human Rights Commissioner in Poland. He is an author of numerous scientific publications in the field of law and a winner of national and international awards for his contributions to the protection of the rule of law and human rights. He was a member of the board of experts of the European Institute for Gender Equality and the board of directors of the UN Fund for Victims of Torture, as well as an expert of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights. He is a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
