Solidarity on the Move: Social Movements, Direct Social Actions and Migrations in Italy since the Long Summer of Migration

Abstract: Italy is a country of first arrival in Europe for the vast majority of migrants reaching the continent. In 2015, one million people crossed the Mediterranean Sea looking for a better life, during what has been called “the long summer of migration” and since then, migrations to (and through) Southern Europe have seen ebbs and flows. In this context, solidarity-oriented collective action around the issues of migration and asylum took different forms, from solidarity activities carried on by grassroots volunteers in Mediterranean islands and border areas, to protest against the securitisation of migration, including the political activism of asylum seekers and migrants. Based on extended research on the topic and on the extant literature, this seminar reconstructs the dynamics of migration-related collective action in Italy since 2015 focusing on the role of borders, emergencies and the related forms of collective action.

BIO* Lorenzo Zamponi is an associate professor of sociology at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, Italy, where he is part of COSMOS (Centre on Social Movement Studies). His main research interests are social movements, political participation, collective memory and media analysis.
