Description: Migration and human geography are inherently interconnected and studying them together helps uncover how migrants’ experiences and migration politics develop distinctive characteristics in diverse spatial contexts. Spaces shape social relations between migrants and citizens and influence institutional responses and the governance of migration. This panel discussion offers new insights into how spatiality affects how migrants navigate their lives and how they perceive and articulate their sense of belonging, particularly as urban and rural areas each present unique combinations of institutions, discourses, and social dynamics. Additionally, these areas are not homogeneous; different city districts or rural areas feature distinct migration spaces and political processes. Understanding that migrants’ experiences and spaces are mutually constitutive, we believe that sharing empirical and conceptual knowledge on these topics will highlight the complexity of migration politics and belonging across different spatial contexts, as well as underscore the interdisciplinarity of migration studies and research.
