From Ideology to Violence: Radicalization of Yugoslav Radical Right and Fascist Organizations During the Interwar Period (1918-1941)

This dissertation examines and analyzes the radicalization process of multiple Yugoslav radical right and fascist organizations (the focus is mainly on ORJUNA, HANAO, SRNAO, ZBOR, and the Ustaša) during the interwar period (1918-1941). The main focus of the thesis rests on the dynamics of engaging in acts of political violence, its causes, and its consequences for broader Yugoslav society. The thesis aims to address the changing nature of rightwing violence, patterns of radicalization, and the dynamic interplay of factors that led or contributed to radicalization or de-radicalization in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The main hypothesis of this work is that radicalization as a category applies differently to the examined case studies due to changing sociopolitical circumstances that existed in interwar Europe. These changes also applied to the shifting nature of political violence in broader terms and the fact that it was not limited only to right-wing organizations.
